Evaluation

Before starting to produce our film trailer we made sure that we had extensive knowledge of other film trailers and films in our genre. This, we knew, would help us to construct a successful film trailer. At the start of a lot of action film trailers the action is slow with plenty of slow long cuts. This is not an effect we thought worked in our film as we were trying to build suspense so a few fast cuts helped to do that. Apart from the start of our trailer the rest of it, editing wise, does conform to what an audience would expect to find in an action film trailer. During the slower action sequences the cuts are extended where as when the pace of the action builds up the editing does likewise. Many different shot types are used in action films and trailers but each will have a different purpose. When trying to make sure the audience are looking at a particular characters face then we will have perhaps a close up on them so we know the audience are aware of the importance of what is being said. This is a common device used in many films and film trailers over the years.

In terms of sequencing we have conformed to the conventions of real media products by having action at the very start, some less energetic action in the middle so we know a bit about the plot and then action at the end. That is a very short synopsis of what sequence most action film trailers usually follow and we have tried, where we can, to stick to that. A lot of action film trailers will have a rock song as their soundtrack as it goes very well with action films. We have done the same as our main soundtrack is a rock song. Other music is used in our trailer to build up suspense and tension in places, which is also a popular technique in action film trailers as it can be very effective. We have also used a non diegetic voice over which has also been used in countless action films and is still being used to this day in film trailers.
At the beginning of our film trailer we were trying to build up tension and suspense. One shot we used to emphasise this we a close up of the foot of someone running past. The effect of this shot is to make the audience think that the man running is running away from something and that someone is following. We rely on the audience to make that assumption when watching the trailer, as we can only steer them so far to think a certain way. The shots that follow that are looking out from inside a car as trees go past. There are two ways this shot can be meant. First of all the trees passing the car window denote that the car is moving so the audience will know that we are moving to a new location. Secondly it can connote a passing in time. The trees could be seen as small events passing the character by, minor events that perhaps have no effect on the plot of the film. Both of those meanings are equally as effective for an audience as neither will confuse them when the next shot is set in a different place and time to the last.
We have changed a few things from what would be expected of an action film trailer. First of all if you apply prop’s theory, the hero would be someone who fights evil and saves a ‘damsel in distress’ and does it all for a good cause. Our hero is slightly different to that. He does fight evil but at one point in the film trailer he is seen to make a deal with the ‘bad guys’ which a conventional action film hero would never do. It also makes us feel that A, the main character of our film, is a reluctant hero and heroes don’t usually give off that impression.

I think that my ancillary texts compliment my film trailer very well. My Empire magazine cover shows only A in the centre image which connotes him being a standalone hero who has no ‘sidekick’ or organisation to help him. This theme is explored in the trailer as well, as many shots of A are of him alone. The expression on his face in the magazine cover is one of confusion and anger. This again ties in with him being a reluctant hero. The cover also shows A’s arm and the fact that it is metal and glowing. This would make any reader of the magazine think that Freedom is a bionic action film. This would also help the audience to make references to past bionic action films such as Robocop and Ironman which were very successful films. The fact that his other fist is clenched is something else I wanted to make sure was seen in my magazine cover as a clenched fist connotes violence and fighting.

My other ancillary text is a movie poster. This also conveys the themes in my movie trailer. The character is in direct mode of address to capture a potential audience who would be drawn to looking at the poster. As with my Empire magazine cover A is alone in the poster. This confirms that the fight he will endure will be done for the most part, alone. The character in the poster is pulling what I would call a determined and revengeful face which suggests the film in the poster will be an action film. The fact that the arm is glowing adds an air of mystery to the poster with the audience not knowing why the arm is glowing hopefully making them want to see the film. After all the function of a movie poster is to make someone want to go and see the film shown in the poster.

My film trailer contains many representations of different social groups. It represents the army as a force who will use all its power to make sure it gets what it wants. It also shows the army as a very secretive organisation as no-one knows at first about the arm as the army keep it under wraps, all until A escapes from their military base. (Shown below)

The mafia are also portrayed in a particular way in my film trailer. They are shown as sly, manipulative criminals who will go to any length to get what they want. It shows the Don of the mafia as a very powerful man. The audience know his status as we show him sat at the head of a large table in his office looking down on anyone around him. The deviousness of the mafia is shown clearly in our trailer when we see Don Devici telling A that if A gives him his nanotech arm then the mafia will leave him alone. A agrees to this as he values his life above everything else but as he has left the room we have a close up of the Don where he can be heard saying that he wants A dead. This shows the audience that the mafia are not to be trusted in our film and will make them like our main character more because of this. Another type of person represented in our trailer is ‘your average person’. A Meets a stranger in a pub and this man, Hector, is very willing to help A and eventually will provide A with a means to escape. The audience are also meant to have a strong liking to Hector because he goes above and beyond to help out someone he has just met despite the dangers that entails.
The media institution I would like to distribute my media product would be Paramount Pictures. The reason for my choice is they have a very reputable history of releasing good action films such as: The Last Airbender (2010), Watchmen (2009) and The Italian Job (1969).

The film I am going to focus on most is Iron Man (2008). That film was distributed by Paramount pictures and that is the main reason I have chosen that company to distribute my film. Iron Man was a huge box office success as it combined a bionic element with lots of action sequences. Our film is very much similar to Iron Man as our main character has a nanotech arm which has spectacular powers much the same as the character in Iron Man.

I think Paramount would want to distribute our film trailer because of the fact that based on previous films they have distributed, our particular genre is a very popular one which would maximise takings to their company, which is at the end of the day what the film distribution companies are looking for.

Other production studios I research before deciding on Paramount were: Universal studios, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks. First of all, Universal studios. They have a wide range of film genres in their armoury with comedies like Funny People (2009), horror films like Dead Silence (2007) and spy film like The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Universal seem to bring out a range if different genres every year, never focussing on one particular one. They already have an action film scheduled for release in 2010 in Robin Hood. That’s why I decided they wouldn’t be interested in our film. Warner Bros. Have recently released a lot of fantasy films like Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets (2002) and 10,000 B.C (2008). They have tended to g for films like that rather than out and out action films which led me to believe that Warner Bros. Would not be interested in distributing our film. 20th Century Fox release lots of sci-fi films like; Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002), The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007). They tend to steer clear of action films so for that reason I don’t think they would want to distribute our media product. It is clear that every production company have films in different genres with no company focussing on just one genre of film but Paramount would still be the company who I think would distribute my film.
The target audience for my media product is a mainly male audience as most of the characters in my film are male and there is a lot of fighting scenes which are stereotypically entertaining for men. Also action films are stereotypically aimed at men. Women would also enjoy my film as it caters for both genders. I would expect the film to receive a certification of 12a. This certificate would be best for our film as it allows us to maximise audience figures by allowing children as young as 12 to come to our film with their parents. If the certification was 15 then a lot of our audience would be lost. Our film contains mild violence and so deserves a certification but there is no swearing or sexual reference so it doesn’t need a 15 certification.

I would promote my film by running a high profile poster campaign. I would use large posters in public places and at major events in combination with TV adverts. This would hopefully attract a large audience to want to come and see the film at the cinema. Viral internet campaigns can be very effective but I think more people will be aware of the film if it is promoted by a poster a TV campaign. When the TV advert for my film would hit the screen I would like it to be between programs such as a football match or another action film. As my predicted audience will be mainly male I think that having it during a football match would allow more men to see the advert and be attracted to going to see the film. Also by putting the advert in the break of an action film on TV it would ensure that the money spent on the advert was well spent as I will have an action film audience seeing the advert maximising cinema visitors going to see my film.

In terms of attracting our audience to the film we used many conventions of previously sucessful action films. We used CGI in our film which is a convention of modern action film. We also used other action film conventions such as extensive fight scenes and various weaponry.

We showed our film to other members of our class in order to obtain feedback about our film to see what was sucessful and what needed improving. The feeback we obtained was largely positive and we recieved some detailed points people raised with regards to our film trailer. The people who watched our film trailer had positive comments regarding the fighting scenes and the sound effects saying that the fighting lookied very realistic and the sound effects fitted in perfectly with the on screen action. As fight scenes are a convention of action films we were pleased that ours was sucessful. They also thought that the narration fitted in well in the trailer which we found particulaly pleasing. One of the questions we asked to our audience was; What questions did the trailer leave you with? The audience had a few questions such as What has A done to deserve this? And What happens at the end? Both of these responces were what we were looking for as they are questions that will make people want to come and see the full film at the cinema and if that happens then the trailer has done its job of selling the film to a potential audience. Also the audience picked up on our films likeness to IronMan which is another positive piece of feedback because if people associate our film with previously sucessful films then more people would want to come and see our film. The audiences feedback agreed with our intitial intentions as we wanted people to have questions anout the ending of the film and what happens as that will increase interest in the film. The audience we showed our trailer to asked the question does everything work out ok in the end? This means they would have to come and see the film to find out. Based on the feedback I recieved, I would maybe have shown a little bit more of our main characters past so their were no questions about what happened before his arm was transformed by the military. Overall, from the audience feedback we were pleased at how well recieved our trailer was and how much people would be interested in watching the whole film and that is what we set out to achieve when we produced the trailer.

Lots of equipment is used when producing a film. The main piece of equipment is the camera. It captures all of the action making it the most important piece of kit that a film maker owns. In the production of high budget film they might use a track which allows the camera to move freely in a certain direction mainly used to follow movement in a shot. The same high budget films might also use a helicopter with a camera attached which would be used to film something from a very high angle to get more into a shot. Something else that can be used to get high angle shots is a crane. When a camera is attached to it, it gives the director the ability to look down on the action or to film something high up.

Film makers also use equipment such as complicated editing software and various items of sound equipment.
During the production of our film we used basic video cameras and we made good use of a tripod which helped to keep the camera level when filming to ensure the shots were of high quality. We also used an editing program on the computer which easily allowed us to do everything we wanted to our footage. During the editing process we discovered many new possibilities with regards to adding effects to the film and altering sound files. After realising that we could elongate sound files we decided to have the music in the background while the titles were on the screen. Also, after using the tripods over a number of weeks we found how to use them to obtain a variety of different camera angles such as one high up and low down. We discovered a computer program called ‘After Effects’ which allowed us to add an element of CGI to our trailer. (See Below) It let us produce a professional looking effect which we made it look like it was coming from A’s arm.

Subsiduary Task Research

These are my initial plans I made for my Empire magazine cover and my movie poster. I arrived at these ideas after doing a lot of research looking and analysing past Empire magazine covers to find out the conventions and styles they adhere to in order to make my cover look as professional as possible. I also explored other movie posters of a similar genre to make sure my poster conforms to action poster conventions.

Synoptic Treatment

Our film, entitled Freedom is an action film. The action genre is one of the most popular types of films and it is certainly the most popular genre of film for men. Over the years there has been many classic action films such as the James Bond series, The Dark Knight (2008), Saving Private Ryan (1998) and many more.
The film has elements from many other classic action films which will make Freedom a sure hit. It has a mafia element and also a robotic part to it and both of these subjects have already had proven box office success in the past. The film also has unique elements to it by coupling the surreal with the everyday, by giving a robot arm to an everyday human being. There are many main themes running throughout the film like: friendship, hatred, jealousy, anger, violence and retribution.
The film starts with the main character being attacked by something/someone jumping out at him from the trees. When he wakes up he realises that an organisation have cut off his arm and replaced it with a robotic arm. He doesn’t know why this has happened but later finds out that the arm possesses incredible abilities of strength and the ability to change into many different things. He then finds out that the army were the ones who transformed his arm and seeks to find out why. The reason he gets is that they wanted to use him as some kind of super weapon to combat America’s enemies. After finding out that the arm cannot be changed he is desperate to get back home to see his wife and kids.
He knows that the army have restricted his movements so he can’t escape so he decides to drown his sorrows in a bar. He meets a man, called Hector, who says he can help our main character A. In the meantime the mafia had found out about A’s arm and wanted to harness its power for their personal use. The mafia discover A in the bar and wait for him outside where they shoot at him but his arm changes into a shield and A emerges unhurt. He is captured eventually by the mafia and speaks to the mafia boss Don Devici. Devici and A agree on a trade whereby A gives the Don his arm and the mafia help him escape to his family. This plan doesn’t come to fruition as A never goes back to see the mafia and instead calls at Hectors house to see if Hector can help him like he said he could. Hector offers him a room for the night but when he wakes up A finds the house surrounded by the army and the mafia. A three-way battle ensues between Don Devici, A and Lt Kenneth (a representative from the army). The fight is spectacular and during the fight Kenneth reveals the reason they chose A is because from an early age he has had the ability to harness nano technology. Kenneth then brutally kills Don Devici leaving him free to get A. However just as Kenneth makes his move A is recued by Hector who has stole a boat from the lake. They escape together and disappear into the distance leaving Lt Kenneth stranded by the side of the lake.
This ending leaves the film available for a sequel and would make the audience quite excited about what is to come in the future. If any director could be chosen to direct this film it would be Ridley Scott. The reason I chose him is based on his previous work. The film Gladiator (2000) has many awe inspiring fight scenes which would defiantly benefit Freedom. Another Ridley Scott film that I think would help Freedom is American Gangster (2007). The mafia scenes in this film are excellent and if this could be incorporated into ‘Freedom’ it would defiantly improve the film. Due to the broadness of the action genre I don’t feel a specific release date is required for this film as I think it will be a hit all year round.

Shooting Schedule

This are our shooting schedule. Before we went out to film each day we would look at our shooting schedule so we knew what we were supposed to be filming that day and where we would need to go to film it. Without this schedule we would not have had an idea of what we needed to do before we went out to film so they have saved us huge amounts of time which we spent filming and generally improving our trailer. Shooting schedules are used by production companies so they know what resources are needed at a certain time in a certain place. They can also be used to plan finances as making a film is a very expensive process so they can't afford to waste money and by having a shooting schedule they will have a better idea of where their resources are.

Technical Limitations and how we overcame them.

We came across many technical limitations during the filming and editing process but we still produced high quality footage. Firstly we had to make sure that the camera has sound because in the past we have filmed things and came to upload them to the computer and the clips have no sound. To combat this we just filmed a few seconds of action and then listened back to it to ensure it had sound present before going out to film. On most of the shots we wanted to make sure the camera was steady so we used a tripod, however sometimes the tripod wasn't level so once again we made sure the tripod was level before filming. Special effects are used in almost every action blockbuster but we didn't have the capability to use such technology. Instead we decided to physically make the arm see like a bionic arm. We did this by buying a part to a costume from a supermarket which when attached to A's arm looked like a metal arm. This prop fitted the bill aesthetically but we still had to make sure that when we were filming that no flesh could be seen as the audience will expect the arm to look like a bionic arm. In combination with the plastic arm we purchased, we experimented on the Adobe Photoshop computer program and printed off a piece of paper that was of flesh colour in the background but had metal strands towards the end which was to signify the metal arm meeting the original arm. That was wrapped around A's arm and the plastic arm was placed on top of the paper. Overall I think that the props were successful and the audience wouldn't be disappointed with the arms appearance.

Detailed Treatment

Our film trailer begins with a mid shot of the main character A running down a forest trail towards the camera. The next shot is a close up of his feet as he runs past the camera. This shot is intended to emphasise the fact that there is some kind of chase element involved as by showing solely the feet makes people think that A is being followed and creates an air of tension to the scene. At this point the audience will be expecting something to happen to the person running due to the build up in tension. We then cut to a shot in the original camera position and we see someone jump out from behind a tree and grab A. As soon as the man from behind the tree makes contact with A the non diegetic music starts in the background, at first the music is contrapuntal as the music is loud and heavy but the action is slow. The music starts, as our production cards appear on screen for a few seconds. We then experience a shot from within a car looking out the front window. During this shot there is a voice over describing his life while he was still a police officer which will make the audience like this character as he is clearly a normal policeman. It is filmed while the car is moving and tree tops can be seen out of the window signifying that minor events have passed by, almost in a stream of consciousness showing the audience a change in scene and time has occurred. This will be effective hear as the next shot is A kissing his wife in a corridor set while he was still a police officer. The shot is a mid shot and it shows him walking away signifying him leaving his family life behind, although he does not know it at the time. It then fades to another shot looking out of the car window with a second voice over which says "But one day that all changed". That gives the audience and idea that life will not be the same for our main character but it doesn't give too much away about the films plot.
Then a short fade leads into an establishing shot with a brief pan of a building and in terms of mise-en-scene, there is an air of mystery because of the high fence that surrounds the building as if it has something to hide. This shot serves the purpose of introducing a new scene and it also has a non diegetic voice over in which a gruff sounding American accent says "Keep him alive!" which straight away leaves the audience wondering, who do they want to keep alive? which, once again should make the audience want to watch the film. They should also notice that the voice is not the same voice as was in the car earlier raising more suspicions. The same voice says another sentence to further enhance the audiences desire to watch more.
The next shot is a close up of what clearly is an arm, but it's metal. This straight away is meant to inform the audience of what the last voice over may have been about. It also confirms to the audience that this is an action film because technology applied to humans is a trait in many action films in the past such as Robocop (1987) and Ironman (2008). The fact that in the shot the character is pulling a sleeve over the arm indicates that he is trying to cover it up suggesting that it wasn't his idea to have the arm or it wasn't done with his permission making the plot seem secretive.
A long fade into the next shot signifies a change in time so we know the next shot has moved on in time from the last one. The shot we see is an over the shoulder shot looking at Don Devici sat at a desk. The purpose of that shot is to show that Don and A are in a meeting but at that point the audience don't know what the meeting is about. The viewer will see the blue hooded top of the character in the foreground and might make the connection between that and the sleeve being pulled down over the metal arm as that was blue also. This serves the purpose of being able to move the plot on without having to explain to the audience that the man in blue sat at the table is the man with the metal arm. The non diegetic music quietens while the conversation takes place so we can hear what's being said. Don sat at the desk is seen wearing a suit which connotes power and being in control. Don also appears bigger than A which shows dominance and being in a position of power. The diegetic speech from Don is "Your freedom for your arm". This suggests that A is being held captive by the man in the suit which reaffirms his position of power. It is our final clue that the man in blue is the man who has the metal arm and it also shows that the arm is in demand from a number of sources. It leaves the audience wondering why so many people want the arm making them believe that the arm must have some powers or the ability to do something different. We then fade to another over the shoulder shot looking at our main character and for the first time we see the man in the hood's face and at that moment the audience will realise that the man in the hood is the man we saw kissing his girlfriend earlier in the trailer. It also confirms that the voice over in the car at the start was indeed the same person with the metal arm when A says "Deal". It also raises question that if our main character is agreeing to help the mafia then maybe he isn't your typical action hero as normal heros don't usual agree with the 'bad guys'.
The next shot is a mid shot of Don sat in the same place as in the last shot showing that he hasn't moved. We also presume that A has left, as, during the last scene he was just walking away from the meeting. The music goes silent to show the importance of what is about to be said. Don then says "you know what I want boys". This shows that he has some men who he controls and can tell them what to do showing further his high status. Then it cuts to a close up of Don's mouth saying "I want him dead". This shot puts the emphasis on what Don is saying so the audience know it it something important.
Then rock music starts in the background which contrapuntally coincides with the start of a few fighting scenes. The first of the fight scenes begins with a high angle shot looking down a staircase at A fighting with Lt Kenneth. The Lt is dressed in an army uniform which connotes power and authority. The fact that A is fighting with him show further that he is rebelling against all signs of authority. We know it's A fighting as he is wearing his distinguishing blue hooded jacket. The next shot is a long shot of A running into a fight with two people in military dress before fleeing the scene. The fact that A ran into the fight suggests that they are chasing him and he has had to fight with them to get past them to escape, also with him running off it shows that there will be more fights and more people trying to kill him. Then there is a mid shot of Hector talking to A. Hector sounds like he is pleading with A to listen to him and A respond by saying "I guess I have no choice". By saying this it shows that our hero has no choice as he has run out of options. These shots are connected by fast cuts to complement the action which is a convention of action films. Hector is a character that would be described as a 'helper' if you apply Propp's theory.
The next scene starts enters with a fast cut to tie in with the action. The shot is a long shot of A and Lt Kenneth fighting again halfway through the fight shot we cut to a shot of the same fight but from a high angle position. This is to show that in the entirety of the film this is only a small incident giving the audience a clue that the film will contain a lot of action.
A slow cut then moves to a slow pan in id shot where the arm becomes an extreme close up to show how important the arm is in the film. The next scene is a long shot of A stood in the same position as the last shot but this time a laser beam is shot out from the arm. As the laser beam comes out the arm a non diegetic sound eminates in the background. This sound has become a universal sound for lasers in the action film genre. The fact that we show in the trailer that the arm has powers such as shooting lasers will appeal to a large number of the action genre's fans.

SUPER: Freedom title screen.

END.

Due to the evolving nature of filming our trailer some parts of the script were changed as we filmed. Although the script did help massively while we were shooting the trailer as we knew what was supposed to be happening and what was going to be said during each scene.
